Scripture Reading Plan

  • Colossians, Philemon, and Ephesians are generally thought to have been written by Paul at the same time, and entrusted to Tychicus and Onesimus to deliver to their recipients. As for the place where Paul wrote them, there are two main theories. The first theory says that Colossians were written while Paul was first imprisoned in Rome, waiting to appeal to Caesar (Acts 28). The second theory says that Colossians were written while Paul was imprisoned in Caesarea, a city on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Judea where the Roman Governor of Judea lived (Acts 21-26). However, whether Paul wrote the letter to the Colossians in Caesarea or in Rome, it would be around the same period of time, around AD 60, plus or minus a few years. Moreover, we are certain that Paul wrote these three letters while he was being imprisoned (Col 4:18), hence they are called “Captivity Letters”.
